Assistant Vineyard Manager

Location: Wide River Winery, Clinton, Iowa 

ABOUT US: Wide River Winery is the 10th largest winery in Iowa, producing and selling about 15,000 gallons per year. We have three tasting rooms and a good sized wholesale business. We aim to produce excellent wine and provide excellent customer service.

 Wide River Winery was established in 2005 with about 2 acres of grapes.  Today, Wide River Winery’s vineyard consists of 17 acres of grape varietals, mostly developed at the University of Minnesota to thrive in the Iowa climate and environment. Today, our grapes grown in Clinton, IA, make up about 50% of the wine we produce and sell.

Our estate headquarters located at 1776 E Deer Creek Rd, Clinton IA is in search of an employee who can help us maintain the vineyard, help with machine maintenance and landscaping. 

 JOB TITLE:  Assistant Vineyard Manager

 JOB SUMMARY:

Keeping the vineyard and grounds in good condition includes everything from maintaining the gravel lane leading up to the winery, to working in the vineyard to operating the grape harvester in August and September.     

 Safety is number one priority in all aspects of this role, which includes heavy machine operation, chemical handling, and being aware of customers and fellow employees.

 Reliability, communication, mechanical ability and understanding how weather affects the work schedule are critical to being  successful.

 The schedule for this position is flexible can range from 2-3 days per week to full time at harvest (late August-September).  

 JOB DESCRIPTION:

·      Operating tractors to perform tasks such as mowing, spraying, raking, and coupling/uncoupling of tractor implements

·      Responsible for pesticide applications to the vineyard

·      Assist with vineyard work: pruning, shoot thinning, shoot positioning, fruit thinning, leaf thinning, grape maturity sampling, grape harvesting and transportation

·      Contribute to the wine bottling process

·      Machine maintenance and repair

·      Road maintenance including grating, pot hole filling, winter liming

 QUALIFICATIONS:

·      Agriculture exposure & experience is preferred.

·      Experience operating heavy machinery (i.e. tractors and skid steers)

·      Possess a high attention to detail and demonstrate reliability and punctuality

·      Communication skills: Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and understand instructions.

 WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

·      Ability to work in variable weather temperatures and conditions, lift and carry 50 lbs as needed, perform physical work in vineyards, drive tractors and ATVs, and climb on and off equipment frequently

·      May require extended hours during the harvest season

·      Other responsibilities include but are not limited to maintenance, and landscaping

·      Adhere to all safety procedures
